Local First – Pleasant Valley Solar 2 Scholarship Powers Student Success
College of Western Idaho (CWI) students will benefit from a major investment in their education and career opportunities thanks to a new workforce development scholarship funded by the Pleasant Valley Solar 2 project partners. The group has committed $187,500 to support CWI students training for Idaho’s high-demand industries.
The Local First – Pleasant Valley Solar 2 Scholarship, awarded in partnership with CWI, is open to students pursuing education through a variety of certificates or degrees that lead to employment. The commitment reinforces the partners’ shared goal of helping more Idahoans access education and gain jobs that allow graduates to thrive while remaining in the communities they call home.
“This scholarship directly strengthens Idaho’s workforce by helping more students gain the skills and education needed for their careers,” said CWI President Gordon Jones. “The $187,500 commitment will open doors for CWI students, fuel business growth and support innovation across our state.”
Pleasant Valley Solar 2 project partners presented the donation at a roundtable discussion hosted Nov. 18 at the Nampa Campus Micron Education Center. Project leaders, college administration, and faculty discussed how large-scale energy projects like Pleasant Valley Solar 2 can translate into lasting community benefits and stronger local economies. Guests also heard remarks from scholarship recipients about what this type of support means to them for their academic and career journey.
This latest gift continues the momentum of the Local First and Energy First initiatives established during the Pleasant Valley Solar 1 project, which raised $61,500 in 2024 for CWI scholarships. Pleasant Valley Solar 2 project partners include rPlus Energies, Sundt Renewables, BHI, Alan Stearns, and Thornova Solar.
Pleasant Valley Solar 2 is a 125-megawatt (MW) solar facility under construction in Ada County. The project will create roughly 200 construction jobs and is expected to begin operations by Summer 2026.
Cabrera Builds Future Through CWI
When Audrey Cabrera first walked into College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Drafting Technology program in 2016, she wasn’t exactly sure what drafting was, but she knew she liked to create and solve problems.
“I took an Intro to Engineering class in high school and really enjoyed it,” said Cabrera. “They used Computer-Aided Design software, and when I saw that listed in the Drafting program description, I figured, why not give it a try?”
The Drafting Technology program at CWI is designed for students like Cabrera — those who want to merge creativity with technology and thrive in engineering, architectural, and manufacturing fields. The program immerses students in design using industry-standard software. Through hands-on projects in architectural, mechanical, and civil engineering disciplines, students gain the skills needed to tackle real-world design challenges. Instructors with industry experience guide students throughout, ensuring a smooth transition from classroom learning to professional work.
By the time she completed the program, Cabrera had not only discovered a passion for drafting but also built the technical expertise and practical experience needed to launch her career.
Cabrera graduated from CWI with her Associate of Applied Science Degree in 2018 and started her career at a local residential design firm, Draftech, helping bring custom homes across the Treasure Valley from concept to reality. Over the next seven and a half years, she worked her way up to Lead Designer, taking pride in every floor plan, elevation, and site plan she created.
“Every home I’ve designed feels like an accomplishment,” Cabrera said. “I love driving by them and being able to say, ‘Hey, I designed that!’”
Looking back, Cabrera credits CWI with giving her the foundation to start her career.
“I had great mentorship and advice from my instructor, and the program just had a strong community,” she said. “The CTE programs here are excellent, very hands-on and practical. It gave me the tools I needed to actually do the job I wanted to do.”
After several years in the industry, Cabrera was ready for a new challenge and a chance to make a difference in her community. Around the same time, CWI began hiring for a Drafting Technology instructor.
“When I saw the job posting, I knew it was an opportunity worth pursuing,” Cabrera said. “I wasn’t sure if I had enough teaching experience, but I felt confident in my industry background. I decided to go for it, and I got the call. CWI was where my career started, so coming back just felt right.”
Stepping into the classroom, Cabrera found a new way to be creative by helping students grow their skills and confidence. She understands the challenges her students face because she’s been there herself: balancing school, work, and life while learning a demanding technical field.
“Going to school is tough, but it’s so worth it,” she said. “Remember, this is an investment in your career. Stay organized, communicate with your instructors, and take advantage of all the resources CWI offers — you get out what you put in.”
Her background in the drafting industry gives her teaching a genuine authenticity. Students appreciate that she’s done the work herself, from early design concepts to final construction plans. Even while teaching full-time, Cabrera continues to work part-time at McClendon Engineering, where she hones her skills and brings fresh insights back to the classroom.
“I can tell students exactly how what they’re learning connects to the job,” Cabrera said. “It’s not just theory. These are the same skills I used every day in the field.”
That hands-on perspective is something she values because of the mentorship she received as a student, particularly from former instructor, Jo Greer.
“Jo had so much industry knowledge and really believed in every student,” she said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without her support.”
Now, as an instructor herself, Cabrera hopes to provide that same guidance to her students. She loves seeing them gain confidence, land jobs, and begin building their own careers.
“It’s a full-circle moment,” she said. “I’m grateful for every opportunity that led me here. I’m proud to help students discover their potential just like I once did.”

Law Enforcement Students Help Community During Rake Up Caldwell
College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Law Enforcement students, staff, and their families joined community members across Nampa and Caldwell for the annual Rake Up Caldwell event on Saturday, Nov. 15. Together, they helped local elderly and disabled residents prepare their yards for winter by raking leaves, trimming bushes, and tidying outdoor spaces.
Rake Up Caldwell is a community volunteer effort that assists elderly and disabled citizens with yard work. The most rewarding part of the day for both staff and students was witnessing the heartfelt gratitude of the homeowners they helped.
“It’s meaningful for us to connect as a team outside the classroom and dedicate our efforts to strengthening our communities,” said Kelli Crawforth, Senior Coordinator of the Law Enforcement program. Instilling a spirit of service in our students is essential — it reminds them to care for their communities at every level of need.”
Law Enforcement student, Isaac Nordstrom, said, “I enjoyed participating in Rake Up Caldwell because it’s inspiring to see our community come together to support one another. Many residents aren’t able to rake their own leaves, and hiring help can be costly. That’s why Rake Up Caldwell is so valuable. When we work together toward a common goal, we can make a meaningful difference for those who need it.”
Addison Dunn, another Law Enforcement student, added, “Doing something as simple as raking up leaves for someone can take a big weight off their shoulders, which makes a difference in their life. Most importantly I think this kind of service spreads positively throughout the town.”
CWI Law Enforcement students are required to participate in several community volunteer events each year. This year, students will also participate in Shop with a Sheriff in December. In the spring, the program will continue the tradition of cleaning up I-84, where the CWI Law Enforcement program has adopted a section through the Adopt-A-Highway Program.
