We had a great time during CWI Day at Frank Church High School on Thursday, Feb. 7! Thank you to faculty and staff who shared about the amazing programs we offer at #mightyCWI with future students.
President's Message
Dear Faculty and Staff,
It is my pleasure to announce Denise Aberle-Cannata will be joining College of Western Idaho (CWI) as Provost.
Aberle-Cannata brings a wealth of experience immediately relevant to CWI in our efforts to push, continue to improve, innovate, and excel the education of our students and betterment of our communities.
I want to thank all of you who gave of your time to attend forums, who gave feedback, and especially to those who helped to serve on our search committee. I am thrilled CWI continues to attract top-level professionals who see the great work being done here and want to join us.
As part of this transition, we will work closely with Aberle-Cannata to ensure the transformative work underway continues with the least amount of disruption possible.
In addition to this announcement, I plan to share more information about our new Provost in the near future and look forward to introducing her to our entire CWI Community.
Thank you all for your commitment to our students, our community, and to each other.

Common Read Series: Me Too and Reconciliation
College of Western Idaho’s Common Read Series presents “Me Too and Reconciliation” Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. at the Ada County Campus Pintail Center in the commons area.
The Common Read Series encourages audience members and speakers to take part by reading a common book or document, and arrive ready to engage in a rousing, yet respectful, conversation about the ideas encapsulated in the selected reading. “Me Too and Reconciliation” will focus on writing central to the #MeToo movement and gender equality.
Documents discussed can be found on Blackboard in MyCommons and will include:
- “The Silence” by Junot Díaz
- “Reconciling Rage and Compassion” by Aya de Leon

Stonecrop Magazine Now Accepting Submissions
Stonecrop, College of Western Idaho’s student-run, literary magazine, is now accepting submissions for its next issue to be released this spring. Writers and artists are encouraged to submit original fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art. General and cover art submissions are due by Feb. 14.
Additionally, Stonecrop and Storyfort, a branch of Boise’s annual Treefort Music Fest, are proud to present Storyfort Micro-Fiction Contest 2019. Literary minds are invited to write, read, and enrich listeners with original works. Entries, due by March 1, will be judged by Storyfort guest, Reema Zaman, an award-winning author, speaker, and actress. In addition to prizes like Treefort passes and Storyfort swag, winners of this year’s contest will be published in the next issue of Stonecrop and invited to read their submissions on the final day of Storyfort.

Visiting Artist Series Welcomes Nancy Rourke
College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Visiting Artist Series is proud to welcome Nancy Rourke to the Nampa Campus Academic Building (NCAB) Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The lecture, suitable for all ages, will be interpreted (ASL).
Rourke (name sign, N3) is an internationally-known Deaf artist and activist as well as a full-time professional artist. She frequently does artist-in-residencies at Deaf schools and promotes De’VIA and Surdism through art workshops in community settings. A book about her work, “Nancy Rourke: Deaf Artist Series” is available from Empyreal Press. Originally from San Diego, California, she now makes her home in Loveland, Colorado.
In addition to her lecture, Rourke will host a paint workshop Wednesday, Feb. 20. The workshop, held at NCAB in room 206 from 1 – 4 p.m., is limited to 24 participants. Supplies will be provided. Please email Kayla Adams at kaylaadams@cwi.edu to register.
CWI’s Visiting Artist Series is made possible through a grant from Idaho Commission on the Arts, which is supported by National Endowment for the Arts. Visiting Artist Series workshops, featuring visual and performing artists, are free and open to the public. Thank you to the CWI Foundation and the Wishing Well for helping to fund this event.
