Scholarship Spotlight – Anne L.
Hometown: Nampa, Idaho
Major: Health Science
Anticipated Graduation: 2021
Because of CWI: “I have been able to learn lessons I would not have been able to learn otherwise.”
Anne L., a recent graduate from Idaho Arts Charter School, started at College of Western Idaho (CWI) during the Fall 2018 semester. As a new student, she is looking forward to her experiences as she pursues her education and says the proximity of the College to home was why she initially chose CWI. The scholarships she has received will allow her to reach her goals of becoming a radiology technician or getting into a medical research program.
“I am looking forward to the next part of my journey which will allow me to grow and learn even more. I like the idea of learning something new and gaining more knowledge.”
Media Club Hosts First Meeting at New Location
The recently developed Media Arts program at College of Western Idaho (CWI) moved their base of operations from the Ada County Campus to the Canyon County Center (CCC). One benefit of the move is more space. Soon, they will have a full studio set up including a green screen wall, news desk, professional news cameras, and lighting equipment. The Media Arts students and Media Club hopes the new, larger, and more equipped space will provide more hands-on experience.
CWI’s Media Club held their first meeting of the semester at the new location on Thursday, Sept. 20. New and veteran members attended the meeting and discovered photography, videography, and writing as common themes of their interests. The club has many ideas for fundraisers including a movie night, professional headshots, and a Halloween photoshoot. These fundraisers will help members of the club fund trips to media conferences and/or film festivals.
Congratulations the new officers!

Beta Sigma Pi Chapter Honors National Suicide Prevention Month
In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Beta Sigma Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will place 1,100 flags in suicide awareness month colors, purple and teal, on the campus lawns to help students and staff visualize the loss.
There will be a banner for students to sign after they have added the crisis hotline number to their cell phones. Reading material will be available for students who have any questions.
National Suicide Prevention Month is an annual campaign in the United States to inform and engage health professionals and the general public about suicide prevention and warning signs of suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Idahoans age 15-34. There are 1,100 suicides at colleges every year.
“It is our greatest hope as the Beta Sigma Pi Chapter that students and staff will help spread the hotline number to family and friends and reach out to those who may be exhibiting signs of suicidal thoughts or behaviors,” said Elizabeth Carter, Beta Sigma Pi President.

2018 Wishing Well Applications
The College of Western Idaho (CWI) Foundation began accepting Wishing Well applications Monday, Aug. 13! Thanks to the generosity of employees, supportive community partners, and approval from the CWI Foundation and Scholarship and Grants Committee, nearly $7,000 was awarded to four programs at the College through the Wishing Well Fund last year. The fund, established in 2015, was created to support small items and student learning opportunities not typically funded through department budgets.
Do not miss out on this exciting opportunity! Applications for this year’s Wishing Well funds will be accepted through Friday, Sept 28. Visit the Wishing Well Grants page on myCWI to learn more and to find the 2018 Wishing Well application. For questions, please contact Rena McKean at renamckean@cwi.edu or 208.562.3182.
