Because of CWI: “I am able to work in a field that I love!”
After spending 15 years raising children, it was time for Crystal to focus on her education.
Crystal had always loved redesigning her house, tearing down walls, working on tiling, and plumbing projects. Her friend, Jo Greer, an instructor in College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Drafting Technology program, suggested she pursue her passion and study to become a drafter.
“Greer was incredibly supportive,” Crystal said. “She told me, ‘you can do this - you’re awesome!’”
Getting a great education for a good value was important to Crystal. She wanted to avoid going into debt while finishing the two-year program, and CWI provided that opportunity. Crystal had attended college before, but stopped when she became pregnant to focus on her family.
“I’m the oldest student in class, but I think my life experiences have helped me. I appreciate education a lot more now because it’s not Mom and Dad paying for it,” she said.
While attending CWI, Crystal volunteered with Skills USA. She enjoyed the chance to learn about the trades from a variety of programs including Diesel Technology, Welding and Metals Fabrication, as well as Machine Tool Technology. She also learned how to compete under pressure and improve her customer service skills.
Following graduation, Crystal will be working full-time, as a drafter, for Renaissance Remodeling in Boise.
