STEM Out! Event Dazzles Future Students
College of Western Idaho (CWI) held its annual event STEM Out! into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medical Careers Saturday, Oct. 14. More than 140 sixth through ninth graders attended, while 24 programs were represented and numerous staff and faculty participated from CWI.
“All of the kids had a wonderful time! They were so excited to tell me about it that they had a hard time taking turns in the car on the way home,” said one parent. “All evening I've had kids coming to tell me something else they learned or enjoyed that they had forgot to tell me. I appreciate all of the work that went into making it an amazing day. Thank you!”
STEM Out! offers potential future CWI students career information and hands-on experience in many CWI programs. From Archaeology and Biology to Cyber Security and Dental Assisting to Drafting and Law Enforcement to Surgical Technology and Welding, sixth to ninth graders in attendance had the opportunity to experience potential careers and begin thinking about their futures.
“My friends and I had a lot of fun while learning about all the interesting STEM careers offered at CWI,” said Ashley Hardy, a student at the event.
Speech & Debate Results for October Tournament
College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) speech and debate team started the 2017-18 competitive season with a strong victory at the Steve Hunt Classic, hosted at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Oct. 13-15. The tournament featured 42 schools from 11 states, for a total of more than 600 entries. In addition to winning the community college division, CWI received second place in speech events among all two- and four-year schools. This marks the first time CWI has achieved such a high honor at the Steve Hunt Classic.
Fifteen CWI students competed at the tournament in both speech and debate events, bringing home awards in both categories on the way to winning the community college division.
The Steve Hunt Classic marks the first of three Northwest Forensics Conference (NFC) designated tournaments in which the team will be competing to earn points toward the division championship decided in January.
