Join College of Western Idaho's (CWI) Visiting Artist Series in welcoming sign painter and muralist, Jay Smith, to the Nampa Campus Academic Building (NCAB) Oct. 29 – 30 for an artist lecture and hands-on workshop.
Smith is a Boise-based sign painter, muralist, and teaching artist with nearly a decade of experience creating hand-painted signage, murals, and public art throughout the Treasure Valley. Through his business, Painted Jay, Smith combines traditional painting techniques with a passion for community-driven art and creative collaboration.
In 2024, Smith organized, coordinated, and taught Mural School, helping emerging artists develop the skills and confidence needed to create large-scale artwork. His work reflects a commitment to sharing artistic knowledge, creating opportunities for fellow artists, and making public art more accessible to the communities it serves.
Join Smith for a lecture highlighting his artistic practice and experience as a professional sign painter and muralist.
Artist Lecture

In addition to his lecture, Smith will lead a hands-on brush lettering and sign painting workshop. Participants will learn the fundamentals of lettering with a brush, explore different lettering styles, and practice traditional painting techniques used to create bold, expressive letters by hand.
Whether an aspiring artist, designer, or simply curious about the craft, participants will have the opportunity to develop practical skills, experiment with their own creative styles, and experience the art of hand-painted signs.
