Students in College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology programs practiced emergency response skills during Basic First Aid training led by members of CWI’s Law Enforcement program.
Senior Program Coordinators, Gary Cooper and Jason Pietrzak, and Law Enforcement Program Director, Kevin Wittmuss, partnered with Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology to lead two training sessions focused on responding to traumatic injuries.
The training began with a discussion about access to basic first aid supplies, including an individual first aid kit, and how those supplies can be used during an emergency.
Students then practiced several first aid skills, including packing traumatic wounds with gauze, applying pressure dressings and properly applying tourniquets to control severe bleeding.
Following the instruction, students put those skills into practice during two scenarios involving an injured person portrayed by Automotive Service and Collision Repair Chair, JohnD Thompson. The exercises gave students an opportunity to practice assessing and treating an injury in a controlled setting.
The training brought the Law Enforcement, Automotive Technology, and Collision Repair programs together to share skills and give students hands-on experience with basic emergency response.
