Solar Eclipse Guidelines for Employees and Students

Published: July 21, 2017

The CWI Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday, July 18, 2017 to approve the following statement for college-wide distribution:

“Termed a once in a lifetime event, Idaho is a center point of excitement for the 2017 total solar eclipse. Anticipated for August 21, mid-day, the total eclipse is the first since April 28, 1930 to transverse the Idaho skies.

As a result of the rare event, we have received numerous requests as to how CWI will accommodate students, staff and faculty who want to view the eclipse. Fall semester classes are slated to begin that same day, Monday, August 21.

After much discussion and consultation with affected groups, CWI Administration is announcing the following guidelines:

General: CWI will be open and operating on August 21, 2017

Students: fall classes will start on Monday, August 21. If you choose to be absent, you must contact your instructor AHEAD of the start of class and make arrangements to be excused.

Faculty: If you elect not to hold class as per the schedule, please make sure all students are notified and are aware AHEAD of Monday, August 21. You will be required to take personal time off as the College is open and operating. You must notify your department head and secure approval no later than August 4, 2017

Staff: If you elect to miss work on Monday, August 21 due to the eclipse, you will be required to take personal vacation time. You must notify your supervisor and secure approval no later than August 4, 2017.”

If you have any questions, please speak with your immediate supervisor.

Thanks so much for all you do for our students!
