CWI Speech and Debate Excels at Steve Hunt Classic

College of Western Idaho (CWI) Speech and Debate continued an impressive start to the 2013-14 season with a strong showing at the Steve Hunt Classic, Oct. 11-13. The tournament, hosted by Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., featured 46 schools from 13 states. As a team CWI managed top honors among two year schools, as well as a sixth-place finish overall.

In individual speech events, CWI students placed fourth overall. Luke Yeates led the way with a first place finish in Junior Impromptu speaking while also receiving a finalist award in Novice Extemporaneous speaking. He was joined in individual speech honors by Lisa Webb, who placed third in Novice Persuasive speaking, and Justin Henry, who placed third in Novice Informative speaking. CWI’s speech success was capped by co-captain Brandy Music receiving a finalist award in Senior Dramatic Interpretation and Senior Dramatic Duo with her partner, Lauren Molloy, who also received a finalist award in Novice Impromptu speaking.

CWI would see its success continue in debate competition, with Codi Griffiths breaking into final elimination rounds in Open IPDA debate. Additionally, four CWI students received speaker awards for their overall performance during rounds. Griffiths and co-captain Matt Mudd received awards in Senior IPDA debate, while Music received an award in Novice NPDA debate, and Matt Brown received an award in Novice IPDA debate.
