CWI Cheers on Steelheads During Playoffs!

Published: May 12, 2023

College of Western Idaho (CWI) cheered on the Idaho Steelheads to another victory at a bonus CWI Night Wednesday, May 10! CWI took over Idaho Central Credit Union Arena in Boise to support the Steelheads in their game with Allen Americans during the second-round East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Kelly Cup Playoffs.

The night began with a moment of silence to honor and remember the victims of a mass shooting at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas on Saturday, May 5. Players on both teams also wore “Allen Strong” stickers on their helmets during the night’s game.

“We may be opponents on the ice, but we are one family in hockey and the ECHL,” Steelheads posted in a statement on social media.

After, CWI Board of Trustee Chair, Molly Lenty, Government and Community Relations Director, Ashley Smith, and Business student, Mady Ray, joined the captains from each team on the ice for the ceremonial puck drop to kick off the night’s game.

To spread the word about CWI and its programs, the College’s Enrollment team interacted with current and potential new students, gave out free CWI swag, threw out CWI t-shirts, and entered people into a drawing to win a free CWI hockey jersey all throughout the night! Congratulations to Alexandria Schneider who was the night’s lucky hockey jersey winner!

To celebrate a triumphant hockey season, representatives from the Steelheads and Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) joined CWI on the ice and tallied up how much scholarship money was raised for two awesome initiatives. Throughout the season, $5 of each CWI Nights group ticket sales went to the SCORE Big Scholarship fund — which totaled nearly $5,000! ICCU also donated to the SCORE Big Scholarship fund for each power-play goal throughout the season. totaling $4,031!

Thank you to all those who joined us throughout the last few months for many great nights and for supporting students’ education. CWI’s SCORE Big Scholarships Fund raised more than $8,000 during the 2022-2023 Idaho Steelheads season and awarded four CWI student scholarships.

Be on the lookout for upcoming information about our CWI Night at the Boise Hawks planned for Thursday, June 29. Hope to see you there as CWI continues to raise funds to provide student scholarships!
