Accounting Students Prepare for 2018 Tax Season
Students in Assistant Professor, Joe Welker’s, ACCT 251 class welcomed guest lecturer, Randy Tilley, to campus on Monday, Jan. 14. Tilley, the division administrator of the Audit Division for the Idaho State Tax Commission, has lectured Welker’s students prior to tax filing season for the past six years highlighting important changes and updates to the Idaho tax code.
Tilley’s visit was especially valuable as students from the class will also participate in the College’s annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program this semester. Beginning Jan. 28, students will be filing individual income taxes at no charge for fellow students and the community.
“A big thanks to Randy,” said Welker. “This was his final update for CWI students, as he is retiring after 36 years of service to the State Tax Commission.”
Services are available on the following dates and times through the 2018 tax season:
Mondays: 1-3 p.m. / Nampa Campus Academic Building, Room 201
Thursdays: 2-4 p.m. / Ada County Campus Pintail Building, Room 1203
Over the past seven years, CWI students have helped individuals save hundreds of thousands of dollars in preparation fees! Those with an annual income of $54,000 or less qualify for this free service. All are encouraged to stop by for tax assistance from one of our highly-skilled preparers!
Scholarships Open for 2019-20 Academic Year
The College of Western Idaho (CWI) Foundation scholarships application period is now open for the 2019-20 academic year. One application makes applying for scholarships at CWI easy and provides students with a number of scholarship opportunities in the College’s academic and career-technical programs. More than 200 students received scholarships through the Foundation last year.
Nichelle Boyce, a Biology-Healthcare student and 2018-19 scholarship recipient, has worked multiple jobs in order to make her dream of an education possible. As the recipient of the LTH Don’t Give Up Scholarship, Nichelle says because of scholarships like this she will be able to graduate debt free even as a single mom.
“I have been able to become a positive example to my children. Even at such a young age they understand that to obtain your dreams, you have to challenge yourself—sometimes that means you have to be temporarily inconvenienced,” she said. “Because of CWI, our lives are changing.”
New scholarship opportunities are available for the 2019-20 academic year including the new Nagel Foundation Scholarship for second-year Career Technical Education students.
Students interested in applying for scholarships must have the CWI admission application completed, be accepted, and have myCWI login information. The application closes March 31, 2019.
