Six College of Western Idaho Students Capture SkillsUSA Gold

MEDIA ADVISORY – College of Western Idaho (CWI) will be sending six students to test their ability against the nation’s best in Professional Technical Education after earning gold at the 2012 Idaho SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference, April 12-13. CWI took home 13 medals in all – including the six gold honors – from 12 different competitions held a various locations around the Treasure Valley.

CWI students Jessica Crowley (Automotive Refinishing Technology), Benjamin Dahlman (Precision Machining Technology), Josh Farnsworth (Diesel Technology), Paul Hodges (Internetworking), Phillip Kildow (Extemporaneous Speaking), and Joe O’Dell (Power Equipment Technology) each secured tickets to nationals with first-place finishes in their respective event. Six national qualifiers marks the most for CWI in the College’s young history, having sent four students in 2011.

The success didn’t stop at gold for CWI however; as the school also had students earn three silver and two bronze medals to conclude the competition. Nathan Heintz (Related Technical Math), Robert Kringel (CNC Milling), and Angela Leavell (Commercial Baking) all took home silver medals. Heintz (Electronics Technology) and Braden Cripps (Automotive Refinishing Technology) captured bronze.
CWI’s six gold medal winners will now begin preparation for a trip to the 2012 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Kan., June 23-27.
