Published: November 20, 2024

Rick Del Vecchio, an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science and Information Technology department at the College of Western Idaho (CWI), has been named Faculty of Distinction for November 2024. Del Vecchio’s career at CWI spans nearly a decade, beginning as an adjunct and evolving into a full-time faculty role, reflecting his deep commitment to education and student success.

Del Vecchio teaches a range of software development courses, including Intermediate Web App Development, Client Side Frameworks, Systems Analysis and Design, and Game Development. His approach to education is driven by a passion for the subjects he teaches and a dedication to sharing that knowledge with students. He describes his teaching philosophy as stemming from the joy of helping others learn, especially when they experience those transformative “light bulb moments.”

Beyond his formal teaching duties, Del Vecchio plays a crucial role in student life at CWI. He is deeply involved in the Gaming Club and serves as the Head Coach for the Esports team. Under his leadership, these groups provide students with a platform to explore their passion for gaming, develop team-building skills, and engage in community events like the Extra Life charity event, which raises money for local children’s hospitals.

Del Vecchio’s educational journey is closely tied to CWI, where he earned associate degrees in Software Development and Philosophy. He is currently pursuing further degrees in Philosophy and Educational Leadership. His professional background includes a decade in the technology field, encompassing roles from computer repair to game design. This diverse experience enriches his teaching, providing students with practical insights into the industry.

In his classes, Del Vecchio is known for creating a supportive and inclusive environment. He emphasizes hands-on learning and critical thinking, ensuring his courses are not only informative but also engaging. His commitment to student welfare is evident in his teaching style, which includes regular check-ins with students and a flexible approach to course deadlines to accommodate their varying personal circumstances.

A specific moment that stands out in Del Vecchio’s career at CWI was when a student he tutored overcame significant challenges and succeeded, thanks to his support. This experience reinforced his desire to teach and make a difference in students’ lives. It’s these moments of personal connection and positive impact that drive his dedication to teaching.

Del Vecchio’s personal life is deeply rooted in the Boise County community, where he enjoys a rich family life and outdoor activities. Living on land he purchased next to his parents, he values the close-knit family environment, which includes his wife and young son, Ragnar.

Del Vecchio’s recognition as Faculty of Distinction for November 2024 is a testament to his exceptional impact on his students and CWI. His blend of professional expertise, dedication to student engagement, and commitment to community makes him a standout educator who truly embodies the spirit of CWI.
