College of Western Idaho (CWI) welcomed government and industry leaders from Kazakhstan's mining sector on May 4 as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program, a professional exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and facilitated locally by Global Ties Idaho.
The delegation met with Associate Professor of Geosciences, Ander Sundell; Dean of the School of Science, Technology, and Math, Kae Jensen; and Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, Justin Vance. During the visit, participants learned about the American higher education system, the role of community colleges, and CWI's new Mining Technician program.
Discussions focused on how partnerships between industry and educational institutions help address workforce needs. Delegates expressed interest in CWI's collaboration with employers to prepare students for careers in mining and other high-demand fields.
The group also toured classrooms and learning spaces used for Mining Technician and Geosciences courses providing a firsthand look at how students gain technical knowledge and hands-on experience.
"It was a privilege to welcome our guests from Kazakhstan and share how CWI partners with industry to prepare students for meaningful careers," said Vance. "These conversations remind us that workforce development is a global challenge, and we all benefit when we learn from one another's experiences."
Located in Central Asia, Kazakhstan is one of the world's leading mining nations. The industry plays a significant role in the country's economy and is known for its production of uranium, copper, gold, chromite, zinc, and iron ore.
The International Visitor Leadership Program is the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program. For more than 80 years, the Leadership Program has connected current and emerging international leaders with their U.S. counterparts through short-term visits focused on professional collaboration and cultural exchange.
