College of Western Idaho (CWI) Fire Service Technology and Law Enforcement students joined first responders and community members to remember the lives lost and honor the heroes of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Students and faculty gathered with Nampa Fire and Police departments, community leaders, and members of the public for the City of Nampa’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony. The 25th anniversary ceremony was held at Nampa Fire Station 1.
For CWI students preparing for careers in fire service and law enforcement, participating in the annual ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by first responders on 9/11 and recognize the responsibility that comes with serving and protecting their communities.
That reflection carries particular significance for today’s students, many of whom were not yet born when the attacks occurred. CWI Law Enforcement Program Director, Kevin Wittmuss, emphasized the importance of helping the next generation understand not only what happened that day, but also the service and sacrifice demonstrated by first responders and countless Americans in the days and years that followed.
Many who remember the attacks are asked, “Where were you that day?” Twenty-five years later, Wittmuss offered another question for students to consider: “Where were you today?” For those who attended the ceremony, the answer was alongside first responders, community leaders, and one another — remembering those who were lost and honoring those who answered the call.
"CWI is proud of the students, faculty, and staff who participated in this meaningful memorial and helped ensure that the lessons and legacy of 9/11 continue to be remembered," Wittmuss said.
CWI Fire Service Technology and Law Enforcement students have participated in the memorial for several years. Beyond honoring those affected by the events of 9/11, the ceremony gives students an opportunity to connect with local agencies and community partners.
