Start Here Conference Inspires Entrepreneurs and Student Innovators

Published: June 18, 2026

Entrepreneurs, students, business owners, and community members filled the Nampa Civic Center on June 9 for College of Western Idaho (CWI) Entrepreneur Lab's Start Here Conference, an evening dedicated to inspiration, connection, and entrepreneurial growth.

The event featured a panel discussion with local entrepreneurs and innovators Tori McKim, co-owner of Flying M Coffee; Oscar Diaz, founder of Relentless Owl Studio; and Maegan Rupe, inventor of the PowerPort Sweater. Each shared insights from their entrepreneurial journeys, offering practical advice and encouragement to aspiring business owners and innovators.

Attendees also heard from keynote speaker Kristin Armstrong, three-time Olympic gold medalist and entrepreneur, who shared lessons on perseverance, leadership, and overcoming challenges. Following her presentation, Armstrong spent time meeting with attendees and aspiring entrepreneurs, engaging in thoughtful conversations and offering encouragement and support.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of two $1,000 awards designed to support innovation and educational advancement.

The Entrepreneur Prize was awarded to Othniel London for his emerging business concept, which provides moving services tailored to college students and young adults.

The SCORE Big Scholarship was awarded to CWI student Logan Powell, who also showcased his company, Salt Stack, a business that delivers software and marketing solutions for complex mid-sized organizations. The scholarship will support Powell's continued education and entrepreneurial development.

In addition to the featured speakers and award presentations, attendees had opportunities to connect with local entrepreneurs and organizations during networking sessions throughout the evening. Businesses represented included the three panelists, PurposeBuilt PCs, and Idaho Underground.

Spring 2026 OtterTank winner PurposeBuilt PCs, founded by Jacoby Morrissey, Nathan McLaren, and Isaiah McDonald, showcased its teen-led custom PC-building business. The company provides consultation, custom computer builds, cleaning, and troubleshooting services tailored to each client's budget and intended use.

Fall 2025 OtterTank winner Idaho Underground, founded by Jared Lopez, is an after-school program supporting students facing socioeconomic and personal hardships, also participated in the event and shared information about its work serving local youth.

With 100 tickets sold, proceeds from the conference will be reinvested into future entrepreneurial competitions and student prize opportunities, helping expand support for emerging innovators across the Treasure Valley.
