CWI News – July 26, 2024
President's Message
I hope you all are having a great summer and staying cool during this hot weather.
As summer semester concludes this week, I would like to extend my gratitude to the faculty and staff delivering high-quality educational opportunities to students. Your dedication to our students and the College's mission is truly commendable.
With the Canyon County Fair in full swing, I hope you can visit the event and enjoy the food, exhibits and maybe even a concert.
Speaking of community events, the Snake River Stampede had another successful event last week. For the second year, CWI partnered with the rodeo to host the Youth Rodeo 101 Clinic. Nearly 100 kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Nampa learned about saddle bronc, bull riding, and barrel racing. If you have a chance, I encourage you to watch the story that ran on KIVI.
Thank you all for your dedication, passion, and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing you during the Fall Address on Aug. 14.
Respectfully,

CWI’s Honors Program Enables Students to Level Up Their Future
College of Western Idaho (CWI) hosts a multitude of programs, classes, and clubs to help students amplify their potential. For those wanting to elevate their academic journey, the Honors program provides a unique avenue for maximizing educational experiences, becoming classroom and community leaders, and preparing students for future careers. Additionally, students have the opportunity to receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Applications are currently being accepted for the Fall 2024 semester. Incoming or first semester students enrolled full time (12 credits) are eligible. The Honors Program helps classmates and students connect with others who share similar, high-achieving goals; learn from distinguished faculty in specifically designed honors classes; and gain automatic acceptance into honors programs at Boise State University, Idaho State University, University of Idaho, or The College of Idaho upon transferring.
Alex Duran shares the value they find in being a part of the honors program. "Because of CWI, I feel more confident in my future. The College has empowered me to take control of my education and make decisions that are right for me,” said Duran. Enrolled in the Business program at CWI and focusing on accounting, Duran’s goal is to obtain a CPA and work as a managerial accountant. Ultimately, Duran hopes to establish both an accounting firm and dance studio.
“Instructors like Honors Program Coordinator, Michal Yadlin, and Accounting Professor, Joe Welker, have made lasting impressions on my education, providing valuable support and guidance,” said Duran.
“We're delighted to welcome a diverse group of students into the Honors Program cohort and are excited to walk alongside them as they develop into life-long learners, both in and outside of the classroom,” said Honors Program Coordinator, Michal Yadlin. “We look forward to them working to achieve their program degrees along with the opportunity to hone the skills that are vital in becoming active and curious global citizens.”
“Getting to know all of the honors students has been the most memorable experience during my time here at CWI,” said Emily Warfield, who is also part of the Honors Program. “Each one of us are so unique and quirky. It has always made my heart smile.”
This two-year program is open to academic transfer, career technical education, and continuing dual credit students. Honors Program students can expect to complete specific degree requirements as well as honors-designated courses, culminating in the creation and presentation of a project related to their chosen major.
Honors Program students also enjoy a dedicated advisor and smaller classes led by faculty specifically designed for honors students. For those in need of more information about the Honors Program requirements or have questions, visit the program’s page or contact Michal Yadlin at michalyadlin@cwi.edu.
Got AI? New Program Offering Prepares Students for an Artificial Intelligence Future
In a digital landscape that is constantly evolving, 2024 is experiencing a seismic shift in the technology sector. As reported by TheStreet.com, approximately 263,180 jobs have been displaced in the tech industry, with a remarkable 106,630 positions transitioning into Artificial Intelligence (AI)-focused roles. Recognizing the need to empower students with AI-related skills, thought leaders at College of Western Idaho (CWI) have created the Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing (AICC) program.
This isn’t the first time new technologies have revolutionized entire industries. Indeed, similar disruptions have stemmed from the introduction of the cotton gin, the telegraph, the automobile assembly line production model championed by Henry Ford, and of course the integration of computers in the late 70s. “Computers did not replace workers; rather, they redefined the job market. As a result, acquiring computer skills has become a non-negotiable and foundational demand for every professional,” said Scott Didriksen, instructor of AI and Software Development at CWI. “Similarly, AI is set to initiate a comparable workplace transformation,” said Didriksen.
The new Associate of Applied Science degree allows aspiring technologists to be part of this transformation and dive into the world of AI and Cloud Computing. It’s tailored for those craving data analytics, cloud services, and the ethical application of AI in business and cybersecurity contexts.
The curriculum, created through close collaboration with industry heavyweights, will prepare and empower students to spearhead innovation throughout their careers. Experience immersive, practical learning with proficient instructors who integrate real-world predicaments into the classroom.
Not only is CWI leading Idaho in its degree offerings, but also in its ethical integration of AI into the classroom. Liza Long, Assistant Professor of English at CWI, champion of AI-empowered pedagogy, and a proud recipient of the Generative AI in Higher Education Fellowship recently shared, "Students, when educated to harness AI in a responsible and ethical manner, are capable of delivering superior work. These competencies are essential in the contemporary workspace. Preparing our students for this reality aligns seamlessly with our college's mission.”
Whether you're deciphering complex data or safeguarding networks from cyber threats, CWI is the launchpad where passion ignites purpose. Here's a snapshot of the high-impact learning areas you'll explore:
- Ethical AI Implementation: Master the art of ethically leveraging AI in business and cybersecurity scenarios.
- AI-Driven Tools: Acquire expertise in using AI tools to sift through large data sets and convert them into actionable insights.
- Cloud Computing Skills: Develop a robust understanding of cloud infrastructure and services, with potential certifications in AWS Cloud, PCEP (Python), and CompTIA Data+.
- Hands-On Projects: Participate in practical projects that simulate real-world challenges, from crafting AI tools to analyzing cybersecurity threats.
- Industry-Relevant Skills: Build a comprehensive foundation in data analytics, cloud computing, and machine learning, preparing you for a spectrum of sought-after careers.
The Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing program is accepting applicant now for Fall 2024.

Barron Named Staff of the Month for December 2023
Scott Barron, the Tutoring Supervisor for Career Technical Education (CTE) programs, has been named Staff of the Month for December 2023. Since joining College of Western Idaho (CWI) in 2009, Scott, affectionately known as Scotty, has been a cornerstone of the Tutoring Services, contributing immensely to the growth and success of the department and the College as a whole.
With a background that includes 13 years of tutoring and teaching at Boise State University, Barron eagerly embraced the opportunity to help develop the tutoring centers at CWI. Reflecting on the past 15 years, Barron described it as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join a dedicated team of educators in laying the seeds for a new institution.”
Barron’s responsibilities as the Tutoring Supervisor are extensive. He provided training, mentoring, and supervision to approximately 20 – 25 CTE tutors, coordinated tutoring support for CTE faculty and students, and facilitated study-skills sessions and personal study plans for CTE students. Additionally, Barron supported Tutoring Services with the goal of expanding their ability to provide comprehensive services aimed at student success. His role also included facilitating College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Levels 1 and 2 training in Learning Theories and Study Strategies for eligible tutors.
One of Barron’s most memorable moments at CWI was during the first year the CTE programs began courses on the CWI campuses. “I had the opportunity to assist the CTE staff in setting up their classrooms and equipment. I must have lost about 10 pounds running around the buildings and stairwells helping to get classrooms ready for fall classes, all the while setting up four tutoring centers,” Barron said. This experience highlighted his dedication and the collaborative spirit that he brought to his work.
Barron’s contributions didn’t go unnoticed by his colleagues. Valerie Lee, one of Barron’s nominators, praised him, saying, “Scott Barron has worked at CWI since it began and has been an instrumental part of Tutoring Services. His dedication to the success of both tutors and students is truly commendable.” Isaac Johnson, another nominator, shared, “Scotty was my supervisor for around four years of my time as a CTE tutor. He always demonstrated professionalism and integrity in everything he did.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Barron has a rich and varied personal life. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and served in the United States Air Force, where he held various staff and casualty notification positions. After retiring from the military, he pursued further education at Boise State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with degrees in Marketing and Management. Barron enjoys exploring ghost towns, traveling to the Oregon Coast and the deserts of the Southwest, landscape photography, jazz festivals, gardening, reading science fiction and true crime, and attending his grandsons’ music concerts.
Barron’s impact on CWI and its community is profound. He attributes the rewarding nature of his work to the collaborative environment at CWI, where faculty, instructional support staff, advisors, and student services staff all work passionately toward student success. “Words can’t begin to describe the feeling you get seeing and hearing the success stories of tutors you have mentored and students you have supported,” Scotty said.
Barron’s contribution to the success of CWI, his dedication, experience, and passion for education were invaluable assets to the College. Though he retired in June, congratulations to Scott Barron for being recognized as the Staff of the Month for December 2023, a well-deserved honor celebrating his exceptional service and commitment.
Ricks Selected as February 2024 Faculty of Distinction
Kaitlyn Ricks, an adjunct instructor in the English department, has been honored as Faculty of Distinction for February 2024 at College of Western Idaho (CWI). Throughout her five years with CWI, Ricks' dedication to her students and passion for teaching have made a significant impact on the college community.
Ricks teaches English 102 and Writing and Rhetoric II, in a remote format, along with various classes for the Adult Education department. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that a meaningful life involves service to others. “Ultimately, my goal isn't whether a student gets an A in my class but whether they walked out of my class feeling like they were respected, learned skills that translate beyond my grade book, and are better prepared to enter the world,” Ricks said. She finds true happiness in those moments when students figure things out, put it all together, and feel proud of themselves.
Ricks' educational background is impressive, with two literature degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, with a minor in Technical and Professional Writing, and a Master of Arts in Transnational and Multicultural Literatures. Additionally, she holds certifications in Teaching English in the Two-Year College and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Ricks' professional journey in education has taken her around the world, from South Korea to China, and from Washington to Idaho.
Ricks believes CWI offers students a personal connection with their instructors and professors, putting the humanity back into education. “Our jobs are about the people we serve, and by showing that example of service, we prepare our students to be part of the larger community of Idaho and the rest of the country by extension,” Ricks said. She values the variety of programs at CWI, which cater to the local economy's needs and provide students with diverse opportunities — from earning a GED to obtaining an associate degree.
Reflecting on her teaching experiences, Kaitlyn finds the most memorable students to be those who worked the hardest, struggled the most, and engaged with her beyond academia. Those students who sought help and advice consistently most often achieved significant success and left a lasting impression on her. “The students who have had the most success are the ones who fought for what they wanted,” Ricks said.
Ricks appreciates how CWI empowers students to see a future where their personal goals are achievable in a way that is empowering and uniquely meaningful to them. She has witnessed students transform from feeling hopeless and frustrated to becoming ecstatic about their futures and proud of their achievements. “CWI gives me a place to help students not only see how success is cultivated but to recognize it in others and provide that same helping hand to others in the community,” Ricks said.
Born and raised in Washington, Kaitlyn is a native of the Pacific Northwest with family roots in the South. She is the proud “mother” of two large long-haired cats, adopted from a local shelter in Boise. In her spare time, Kaitlyn enjoys playing video games and tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons and Call of Cthulhu.
Ricks’ recognition as Faculty of Distinction for February 2024 highlights her unwavering dedication to her students and the CWI community. Her passion for teaching and commitment to student success make her an invaluable asset to the College. Through her service and dedication, Kaitlyn continues to inspire and empower her students, preparing them for successful futures.

High School Juniors Cross Off Skills at CWI Summer CTE Bridge Program
College of Western Idaho (CWI) recently concluded its Summer CTE Bridge Program, a week-long enrichment and skills development initiative for current high school juniors. This program offered participants hands-on instruction, workshops, and industry tours, allowing them to explore different career pathways and kick start their future education.
The program featured two main tracks. Track One included Automotive Technology, Heavy-Duty Truck Technician, Welding, Machine Tool, and Powersports and Small Engine Repair. Track Two covered Mechatronics, Computer Animation, Cybersecurity, Cisco Networking & Security Technologies, and Computer Science. Throughout the week, CWI faculty members from various Career and Technical Education programs engaged with students, introducing them to various skills and practices included in the programs.
Students in the Transportation and Manufacturing Track started their week by learning basic welding and machining skills. They then worked with powersports equipment, running it through a dynamometer. The week culminated in a day focused on heavy-duty trucks, where students got their hands dirty removing wheels and working on truck brake systems.
Meanwhile, students in the Electronics and Computer Systems Track began their week with lessons on Cybersecurity and Networking, building their own miniature computers. The following day, they focused on building and programming Microcontrollers. The week concluded with computer drafting and animation.
All students came together for the last two days of the camp to enjoy industry tours related to the different tracks and programs offered by CWI. The week ended on a high note with food, games, and a debriefing session, leaving students with a deeper understanding of potential career paths and valuable hands-on experience.
