Clinical knowledge, quick thinking, and a little friendly competition put College of Western Idaho (CWI) students in the winning spotlight earlier this month.
Occupational Therapy Assistant students showcased their skills during a Jeopardy-style competition at the Idaho Occupational Therapy Association (IOTA) conference, held at Idaho State University (ISU) in Pocatello on Oct 9 – 10.
Facing off against Occupational Therapy Assistant and Master of Occupational Therapy students from ISU, the CWI team answered questions about clinical practice and professionalism with speed and confidence to claim the win.
The conference brought another reason to celebrate for CWI's Occupational Therapy Assistant program. Second-year student, Kayla Garcia, received a scholarship recognizing her leadership and service as an IOTA student representative.
Garcia balances school and family responsibilities while serving as an advocate for her fellow students. Known for her compassion and professionalism, she has a way of making sure others feel heard and supported, whether through her role with IOTA or her interactions with classmates.
The conference also gave students an opportunity to connect with occupational therapy professionals and fellow students from across Idaho, learn about the profession, and get involved in the occupational therapy community.
"It was an honor to represent our CWI students at this year's conference," said Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Director and Instructor Nette Miller. "As a new program director, it's been a joy to work alongside students who are committed to learning, professional growth, and finding creative ways to keep us all on our toes! Their compassion and ingenuity continue to impress me. While the credit for their success is entirely their own, I couldn't be prouder to have them representing the CWI OTA program."
The students' success at IOTA highlights the hands-on learning and professional development emphasized in CWI's Occupational Therapy Assistant program, where students gain the skills and experience needed to help people build independence and participate in everyday activities.
