From Aspiration to ICU: Kimi Jenkins’ Journey to Nursing

This is a true story about someone from our community who, despite long odds and those saying, “you can’t,” stood defiant and dared to anyway — launching a new career that began at College of Western Idaho.

Dedicated to care

Kimi Jenkins always knew she wanted to be a nurse, but as life took its course, her dreams were put on hold. Now, as a Registered Nurse in the Neuro Surgical Trauma ICU at Saint Alphonsus, she is fulfilling the goal she set for herself as a child — one that has been shaped by perseverance, supportive peers, and an unwavering dedication to patient care.

Jenkins’ path to nursing was anything but traditional. After becoming a mother at a young age, she prioritized raising her son, setting aside her own aspirations. For 18 years, she worked in insurance, but the passion for healthcare never faded.

When her son turned 18 and graduated high school, Jenkins knew it was time to chase her dream. “I have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little kid,” she said. “When my dad spent six weeks in a Neuro ICU after suffering a traumatic brain injury, I saw firsthand the incredible impact nurses have. That experience solidified my desire to work in the Neuro field.”

Not alone

Enrolling in the Registered Nursing program at College of Western Idaho (CWI) was a major step forward, but the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Self-doubt loomed, and the pressure to succeed weighed heavily. “I lacked confidence and was scared of letting myself and my family down,” Jenkins admitted. However, with the steadfast support of her professors, fellow classmates, and family, she discovered an inner strength she hadn’t realized was there. “I learned that I am stronger than I knew! We all faced difficulty in the RN program because it’s really hard, but everyone supported each other, including our teachers. Their encouragement helped me push through and finish strong.”

Jenkins’ biggest source of motivation was her father, who passed away from COVID-19 in 2020. The heartbreaking reality of not being able to be with him during his final moments only deepened her resolve to become a nurse who provides comfort to patients and their families. “The nurse who cared for my dad made sure we knew he was not alone. She and another nurse were with him when he passed. I want to pay that kindness forward.”

Power through persistence

Since graduating from CWI, Jenkins has completed a six-month critical care residency and secured a position in her dream department. Every day, she applies the knowledge and skills she gained during her time at CWI to make a meaningful difference in the lives of her patients. “The program was great! The professors really want to see you succeed. I have made lifelong friends from the nursing program.”

For those just starting their educational journey, Jenkins offers words of encouragement: “The road may seem long and daunting, but it’s going to fly by. You are stronger than you think, and you’ve got this!”

Her story is a testament to the power of persistence, the importance of support, and the incredible impact that nurses have on the lives of others. From overcoming self-doubt to honoring her father’s memory through compassionate care, Jenkins embodies the heart and dedication of a nurse who truly makes a difference.
