President's Message
Greetings CWI Community,
We made it — I want to thank and share my gratitude to all our faculty and staff as we approach the end of the academic year!
During commencement tonight, I am eager to celebrate your hard work as well as the accomplishments of the more than 1,700 graduates. Whether in the classroom or in a supporting role, I greatly appreciate your efforts to support and guide our graduates to achieve this important milestone.
As we wrap up this academic year, I encourage you to join me in a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at the Nampa Campus Academic Building (NCAB) Room 102E, and online.

There will also be time for a Q&A during the event, and I’ll take questions from people attending in person and online.
During the summer, I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy some time off with family and friends to recharge. Thanks again for all you do to empower students and the community.
Respectfully,
Bold Appreciation

CWI Cheers on Steelheads During Playoffs!
College of Western Idaho (CWI) cheered on the Idaho Steelheads to another victory at a bonus CWI Night Wednesday, May 10! CWI took over Idaho Central Credit Union Arena in Boise to support the Steelheads in their game with Allen Americans during the second-round East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Kelly Cup Playoffs.
The night began with a moment of silence to honor and remember the victims of a mass shooting at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas on Saturday, May 5. Players on both teams also wore “Allen Strong” stickers on their helmets during the night’s game.
“We may be opponents on the ice, but we are one family in hockey and the ECHL,” Steelheads posted in a statement on social media.
After, CWI Board of Trustee Chair, Molly Lenty, Government and Community Relations Director, Ashley Smith, and Business student, Mady Ray, joined the captains from each team on the ice for the ceremonial puck drop to kick off the night’s game.
To spread the word about CWI and its programs, the College’s Enrollment team interacted with current and potential new students, gave out free CWI swag, threw out CWI t-shirts, and entered people into a drawing to win a free CWI hockey jersey all throughout the night! Congratulations to Alexandria Schneider who was the night’s lucky hockey jersey winner!
To celebrate a triumphant hockey season, representatives from the Steelheads and Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) joined CWI on the ice and tallied up how much scholarship money was raised for two awesome initiatives. Throughout the season, $5 of each CWI Nights group ticket sales went to the SCORE Big Scholarship fund — which totaled nearly $5,000! ICCU also donated to the SCORE Big Scholarship fund for each power-play goal throughout the season. totaling $4,031!
Thank you to all those who joined us throughout the last few months for many great nights and for supporting students’ education. CWI’s SCORE Big Scholarships Fund raised more than $8,000 during the 2022-2023 Idaho Steelheads season and awarded four CWI student scholarships.
Be on the lookout for upcoming information about our CWI Night at the Boise Hawks planned for Thursday, June 29. Hope to see you there as CWI continues to raise funds to provide student scholarships!

“News of receiving this scholarship came at the perfect time for me; I pour so much of myself into everything I do and the Associate of Science Nursing Program at CWI is no exception. This school year has been full of many personal and educational challenges for me, so it is extremely validating to know my dedication and hard work has been recognized. This scholarship will help me pursue my passion for nursing with all the more perseverance and grit. Thank you to those who have been rooting for me; you make all the difference.”

“As a first-generation high school graduate, and college student, this award means a lot to me. I don’t come from money, and my family didn’t have a college savings, so I am supporting my academic career entirely. This award encourages me to keep advancing in my education and is also a weight off of my shoulder in financials for the next year.”
- Cassie Gaylord
“When I found out I was nominated for this scholarship I was so excited and proud of myself, but to be a recipient — it’s an amazing feeling. - Megan Gibb
“Being selected and receiving the Emerging Scholar award is a significant milestone for me, and I feel incredibly honored and grateful for this recognition. This award serves as a powerful validation of not just my hard work and dedication, but also represents a crucial steppingstone in my academic journey, affirming my commitment to my field of study. Receiving this scholarship has both revealed to me the vastness of my potential of mind and intellect along with opening the doors to multiple pathways towards brighter futures ahead for me.”
- Jared Kipping
"Before I started at CWI, I had very little self-confidence that I would be successful at college and convinced myself that I would fail. This award means so much to me because it tells me that I was wrong, it tells me that I can do it and anyone else that puts their mind to it will be able to as well."
- Jennifer Lowry
“Starting school later in life, I try not to take it for granted. I know that getting an education is a privilege and I am grateful for this great opportunity. Schoenherr Named 2023 Innovative Educator
Congratulations to College of Western Idaho (CWI) Professor of Psychology, Heather Schoenherr, who was awarded a GEM Award for Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing by the Idaho State Board of Education and CapEd Credit Union!
Schoenherr began her CWI journey in Fall 2008 as one of the founding faculty members at the College, where she was able to help other faculty and staff, set up classrooms, and create the culture for CWI when the College opened its doors to students for Spring 2009 semester.
For the last 15 years, Schoenherr has been able to teach students on either end of their CWI journey — those about to graduate in the Social Sciences Capstone course (SOC 290) and those who are in their first semester at the College enrolled in Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 101).
Schoenherr believes the best way to prepare students to become lifelong learners is to help give them insight into themselves and how they process information. To do this, she emphasizes three themes when teaching: challenges, connections, and processes.
First, she stresses that growth comes from challenges. She immediately dispels the myth that if you are struggling, you do not belong. Because of the many different students and backgrounds she works with, she believes it is important to recognize that feeling challenged does not mean you are in the wrong place, instead, you are where you need to be to grow.
“This sets the tone to embrace vulnerability and remove shame surrounding perceived shortcomings in learning,” said Schoenherr. “My focus is always to equip students with an effective knowledge base that allows them to succeed at the content level and promotes an intentional mental framework about themselves as students and professionals.”
Schoenherr has students create connections with others to achieve a connection with the material. In class, students work together in groups to collaborate and evaluate information successfully through her lectures and skill development work.
Lastly, Schoenherr demonstrates the value of falling in love with the process versus the product. She believes this pushes a student to embrace growth and to be purposeful with the skills they are developing. She encourages students to look at failure as a learning opportunity and not a defining character moment.
Through Schoenherr’s guidance, students can achieve more than they imagined possible.
“Heather was an amazing teacher," said one of Schoenherr’s former students. “She was very attentive to her students and grades were always available in a timely manner. For an online class, I was impressed with how present she was. Any question I asked was answered on the same day, and she was supportive and informational. I would recommend Heather to any student. Loved this class.”
Schoenherr has a passion to teach. The profession has allowed her to facilitate connections which then empowers students to strengthen who they are as individuals and as members of society. Being at CWI, she is able to support the mission of a community college to create access to education for all!
“I am privileged to work alongside talented faculty and dedicated students who inspire me to be a better educator,” said Schoenherr. “This award represents my passion for facilitating students’ understanding of human behavior and experiences to serve them in their education, personal life, and careers.
Schoenherr and five other higher education faculty members across the state were recognized earlier this month for their efforts to improve student success in general education courses at Idaho’s public higher education institutions at the General Education Summit in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, held Oct. 12 – 13. The award winners were invited to give a presentation to Summit attendees describing practices they use in the classroom that benefit students.
“I was excited that most of the recipients talked about how they used open educational resources (OER) to help students access materials free of charge to improve learning,” said Dr. TJ Bliss the State Board of Education’s Chief Academic Officer. “The State has invested over $1 million so far to promote increased access and affordability for students through innovations like OER.”
Willoughby Selected as April 2023 Faculty of Distinction
Congratulations to College of Western Idaho (CWI) Adjunct Faculty of Mathematics, Amanda Willoughby, who was awarded Faculty of Distinction for April 2023.
Willoughby has been teaching in various schools and classrooms around Idaho for the last 20 years. Thirteen of those years have been spent being part of the CWI community, where she has taught College Algebra (MATH 143), Trigonometry (MATH 144), and Calculus (MATH 170).
With two decades of teaching under her belt, she continues in the profession because she loves it.
“There are no words to describe the way I feel when I get to see my students finally get it,” Willoughby said. “Teaching allows me the opportunity to make someone's life better and to help them gain the confidence that they need to be successful.”
Working at CWI has been a delight for Willoughby because she gets to be part of a community that “provides an incredible amount of support for students.” She enjoys working with high-quality faculty who care about the student as a person, and not just a number. She adds, another benefit to the College is the smaller class sizes compared to a larger university.
“It provides more of a personal touch to education.”
Being able to have a personal connection with her students is everything to Willoughby.
Several years ago, Willoughby had a student in her Trigonometry and Calculus classes who really struggled with turning in assignments and even making it to class. About four weeks into the semester, she had a heart-to-heart with him where they discussed what being a student looks like, how it translates to the real world, his habits, and what he needed to do to not just scrape by.
Willoughby recalls the student putting forth more of an effort the rest of that semester, but he still struggled.
However, a few weeks ago Willoughby ran into that student, and he shared with her that he graduated last December with a degree in Physics and was a finalist for a job with NASA. He told her that he would have never been able to accomplish all that he has without her “intervention” during Calculus.
“It is moments like that, that make what we do here incredible.”
Other students of Willoughby’s have also felt the same care and commitment she brings in and out of the classroom.
“Amanda is incredibly caring for her students,” said CWI student, Brianna Sali. “She explains things well and makes it so you can still pass even if you struggle. She really wants her students to learn and gives them countless opportunities. She is also a very kind person in general and will work with you.”
Outside of CWI, Willoughby enjoys spending time with her husband, four kids; two boys and two girls, a dog, and three cats. She says when, and if, she has free time, she loves counted cross-stitching, coloring, and playing Candy Crush.
Environmental Science Lab Steps Outside Classroom for Lesson on Sustainability
Have you ever heard of a house made from mud and straw? Do you think you’d be able to live in one?
College of Western Idaho (CWI) students in Biology Instructor, Gary Heller’s, Environmental Science Lab (ENVI 100L) got the chance to visit a Northeast Boise home constructed of exactly those materials to see what a truly sustainable home looks like and learn about the lifestyles of those who live in it.
The 980-square-foot solar home, owned by Dr. Mark Lung, is constructed from straw bales. The home has a year-round interior temperature of 68 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and a zero annual energy bill due to the orientation of the house on the lot from the appropriate winter angle of the sun, the insulation afforded by the "mud"-covered straw bales, the solar water system, and the solar photovoltaic system.
Students were able to walk away from the field trip with the “three-legged stool” concept, which are environmental, social, and economic. They understand if a solution does not address all three of those areas, then it is likely, not sustainable over the long term. Lung’s home is environmentally sustainable in that it has a very low carbon footprint in its construction because it uses the “waste" material of straw and previously used materials and uses very little carbon-based fuel, socially sustainable in that is constructed with the assistance of neighbors, and economically sustainable since it is a very affordable living structure.
“Sustainability is a large part of what we discuss in Environmental Science, but it most helps students to understand this concept when they see it in action in the real world and in someone's everyday life,” said Heller. “Also, they realize it is not some far-fetched ‘tree hugger’ lifestyle, but is equivalent to their current lifestyle and probably, in the long run, more affordable.”
Heller’s Environmental Science lab goes on several field trips throughout the semester that teaches students about topics, like sustainability or water quality. Throughout the Spring 2023 semester, Heller and his classes visited the West Boise Renewal Plant, the Boise River in Star, and the Ada County Landfill.
For those interested in learning about Biology programs at CWI, contact Gary Heller at garyheller@cwi.edu or visit the program page.

Spring 2023 Fire Drill Results
Fire drills have been completed at each of College of Western Idaho's (CWI) campus locations for the Spring 2023 semester.
Each campus evacuated quickly and efficiently utilizing the evacuation routes specific to their area. The Floor Captains did an outstanding job of clearing their assigned areas and reporting to the centralized location in a calm professional manner.
Fire drills are used to identify various elements in our process, such as:
- Allowing occupants to familiarize themselves with drill procedures, location of fire exits and the sound of the fire alarm.
- Allowing occupants to familiarize themselves with exit routes and safe assembly areas.
- Identifying problems with the fire alarm components.
- Identify any weaknesses in the evacuation strategy, communications, and procedures.
- Determining if additional equipment is necessary in certain areas of the building.
- Monitoring individual’s response time to the alarms.
- Observe any hazards that were overseen.
- Observe if additional training is needed to individuals.
- Monitoring the amount of time, it takes to evacuate a building.
- Observe which exits are generally used.
- Note any suggestions/ideas for future drills.
These drills are to prepare students, faculty, and staff for an organized evacuation in case of a fire or other emergency.

CWI IT Rolling Out MFA for Student Emails
Heads up! College of Western Idaho (CWI) Information Technology (IT) Services will be activating multifactor authentication (MFA) for student Office 365 accounts on Monday, May 22.
MFA is an extra layer of security designed to ensure a user is the only person who can access their Office 365 account. Once MFA is set up, a user will only be granted access to Office 365 after successfully providing two or more forms of identification.
IT recommends users select two options in case they may not have access to their primary option at any time.
To be able to use Outlook on an Android or Apple device, a user must download the application from the app store.
For those with questions or in need of more information, please contact IT at helpdesk@cwi.edu or 208.562.3444.
