In the Spotlight

Faculty gathered Friday, March 6, for the College’s Professional Development and Innovation in Action Day. Attendees learned about cognitive load from Dr. Eric Kellerer, Director of Global Outreach and College of Education faculty at Northwest Nazarene University, after which they had an opportunity to share the amazing work being done in their classrooms. The day culminated with the awarding of four faculty members with this year’s Innovation in Action Awards.
President's Message
Our on-going effort to balance effective student learning and college operations has prompted several decisions including the suspension of on and off campus events through April 17, halting all business travel, and the extension of Spring Break for students through April 3. Please know College leadership is heavily engaged in minute-by-minute developments which are impacting all aspects of how we serve our students and communities. We ask for your cooperation, flexibility, and understanding as this situation is very fluid and so too must our approach be in mirroring these shifting circumstances. Please watch this week's vlog below, and visit cwi.edu/coronavirus for updates and information.
Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Information and Resources
Spring Break Extended
- Spring Break for students will run March 23 – April 3, 2020.
- Faculty will return back to work on Monday, March 30, and spend that week preparing to take classes online, if necessary.
- Staff are expected to show up to work as normal and are encouraged to communicate any changes in schedule with supervisors.
Programs
- All CWI Registered Nursing classes will move to online beginning Friday, March 13, 2020.
- This move allows us to evaluate a number of different modalities as we prepare and test for the possibility of additional programs also incorporating full digital delivery, as well as minimize any potential exposure to high-risk persons.
Events
- All CWI events on or off campus are suspended through April 17, 2020.
CWI Travel
- No business travel until further notice.
Personal Travel

However, cases of COVID-19 have been reported in many states, and some areas are experiencing community spread of the disease. According to the CDC, the majority of cases of COVID-19 reported in the United States are travel-related.
If you are planning to travel, you are strongly encouraged to check the following sites for up to date travel advice and information before departing:
- CDC Coronavirus 2019 Information for Travel
- U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories
- World Health Organization Travel Advice
While CWI has not set requirements for personal travel, we strongly urge you to forgo travel to areas with active community transmission or high-risk areas as designated by the CDC.
If you choose to travel to a country or a domestic area with widespread, sustained transmission or sustained community spread as designated by the CDC; We encourage you to self-quarantine for 14 days from the time you left these areas. Please refer to the Workforce Guidance document located at cwi.edu/coronavirus.
We are asking all staff, faculty, and anyone associated with CWI to practice the highest levels of hygiene and decision-making when considering travel. If you are traveling to locations within the United States experiencing active transmission, please exercise extreme caution and diligently monitor health symptoms upon your return.

New CWI Logo Development Underway
Brand Champion representatives from across the College gathered Friday, March 13, at the Nampa Campus Aspen Classroom Building to discuss draft concepts for the College of Western Idaho (CWI) logo as part of the College’s rebrand project. Information collected from the meeting will help the College further develop, refine, and narrow down the logo candidates which will ultimately be presented to the larger internal and external CWI community through a survey process. All faculty, staff, and students can expect to see announcements in the coming weeks to participate in the logo survey.
Staff of the Month—January 2020
Congratulations to Anelise Krause, College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Staff of the Month for January 2020. Krause has been with the College for nearly five years. She enjoys working in the community college environment where she can work with students and make a difference in their lives.
“I really enjoyed working with students in my past position at University of the Pacific in California," Krause said. "When I saw an opening at CWI, I thought it was a good opportunity. I’ve enjoyed being involved in many changes and new ideas at CWI. There is never a dull moment! I think CWI has been a terrific influence to our community, and it is nice to be a small part of that.”
Krause is currently an Administrative Assistant for the School of Health.
“I love being in the School of Health and helping people understand how we can help students succeed. We have so many wonderful programs and labs that are professionally equipped. It’s such a good learning environment for our students.”
Krause was born and raised in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by her parents who were immigrants from Poland, Russia, and came to the United States after World War II. She met her late husband of 37 years in Chicago, Illinois. Together the couple had two children and owned a construction business in Phoenix, Arizona. Following her husband’s death, Krause moved to the Treasure Valley in 2014.
“Moving to Boise was a needed change, and I was ready to embrace the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I was very blessed to meet a wonderful man here who I married in 2018.”
Krause loves traveling, crafting, and home remodeling. Along with her husband, she enjoys hunting for items to repurpose and restore at estate sales and auctions. She looks forward to fixing up the barns on her 12-acre property in Meridian so she can start a business selling the unique items they find.

Nominate a 2020 Emerging Scholar
The Emerging Scholar Committee is excited about the opportunity to select another group of Emerging Scholars! Faculty are encouraged to nominate students based on perseverance, innovative thinking, and professionalism both in and outside the classroom—not primarily on academic status. Students nominated must plan to enroll in six or more credits for the 2020-2021 academic year in both fall and spring semesters and have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
Thirteen students, two from each school of instruction, will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be applied towards their tuition for the 2020-2021 academic year. Students receive awards from nominating faculty at the Connections Project April 23. Nominations will be accepted through April 6, 2020.
