Let’s Get Started 2.0: A Bold New Chapter in CWI's Recruitment Campaign
CWI - Let's Get Started | Awareness
College of Western Idaho (CWI) is launching an evolved version of its Let’s Get Started recruitment campaign this spring — an annual marketing initiative to inspire and attract prospective students across Idaho.
The original campaign resonated by acknowledging the doubts that most face when considering college. It validated those feelings while reinforcing that CWI is a place of empowerment, support, and encouragement.
Now, Let’s Get Started 2.0 takes that message further by spotlighting the defiant spirit of our students. Against all odds and in the face of doubt and adversity, they don’t back down. They rise, push forward, and prove they can.
This campaign highlights real stories from real students — stories of grit, determination, and courage — people from our community that stepped up and found success.
We are excited to introduce you to Kimi, Jose, Aaron, and Juanita — all with a CWI story who turned uncertainty into achievement. Their journeys serve as proof of what’s possible for those ready to take charge of their future.
Are you ready to take that first step?

Sowing Strength: Ali Chick’s Dream of Life on the Land
Overcoming Life’s Unexpected Turns
Ali Chick’s journey leading to College of Western Idaho (CWI) has been shaped by resilience and determination. Starting college amid personal loss and health challenges, she refused to let setbacks define her, choosing instead to pursue her goals with strength and purpose.
“I lost my great grandparents, who were my biggest role models. I found out about my dad’s skin cancer while at the airport. Then I needed surgery myself because of abnormal cells that could’ve led to skin cancer,” Chick shared. “It was overwhelming.”
Despite these obstacles, she leaned on her support system — friends and family who stood by her side during some of her darkest moments. “They helped a lot and listened when I truly needed it,” she said. “I’ve come out of it stronger and with a greater appreciation for life.”
Finding Purpose in Agriculture and Business
Chick is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Agriculture Business, Leadership, and Education at CWI, a program that aligns with her passion for the outdoors and her entrepreneurial spirit.
“I’ve always wanted to own my own business,” she said. “I also have a love for the country and farm animals, both of which bring me so much joy and peace. I’m excited to learn how to run a successful business and discover what makes a wedding venue or Airbnb appealing to guests.”
CWI’s program prepares students for a variety of careers in the agriculture industry — from agricultural education and business ownership to leadership roles in farm and ranch management, lending, and consulting. With a strong foundation in business, leadership, and agricultural science, graduates are well-positioned to make meaningful contributions in rural and urban communities alike.
Academic Success and Future Plans
Chick’s perseverance and commitment to her education have already led to success. She finished her first semester on the President’s List — a significant milestone that signals her ability to thrive even when the odds are stacked against her.
The seed has already been planted for her next steps after completing her program. “After graduating from CWI, I plan to find my dream plot of land to start my business,” Chick said. “I can’t wait to get started!”
A Message to Fellow Students and Supporters
Chick encourages her fellow students to be active and engaged. “Don’t be afraid to be yourself,” she advised. “This is also a lot of others’ first time in college. CWI has an amazing community of people who are always there for others.”
As Chick continues her journey, she carries with her not only the lessons from her great grandparents and the support of her family, but also the strength she’s found in herself — and the education she’s receiving at CWI.
Gratitude for Support and Encouragement
Financial support through scholarships has played a critical role in Chick’s journey. “I was honored to receive the SCORE Big Scholarship,” she said. “It lifted a lot of stress off my back. I’ve been able to save more and put it toward my goals in life.”
To those who support scholarships and CWI’s student programs, Chick offers heartfelt thanks. “Thank you for believing in students like me. Your investment in our future is making a real difference. I’m committed to making the most of this opportunity.”
Ali Chick’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference a community can make in a student’s life. CWI's Giving Day officially kicks off Thursday, April 10 at 12 a.m. MST and runs for 24 hours.
Every gift — and every share — helps inspire, uplift, and power the next generation of learners.
CWI Surgical Assisting Students Hone Skills During Annual Lab Immersion
The College of Western Idaho's (CWI) Surgical First Assistant program hosted its annual, highly anticipated surgical assisting lab during the second and third weeks of March. This intensive two-week immersion provides students with invaluable hands-on experience — solidifying their skills and preparing them for the dynamic world of surgical assisting.
The event, a cornerstone of the program, transforms the Surgical First Assistant and Surgical Technology lab into a bustling hub of practical learning. Students were evaluated on a wide range of essential skills, including:
- Surgical Incision Techniques: Mastering the precision required for initial surgical access.
- Suturing and Vessel Tying: Developing dexterity and proficiency in wound closure and hemostasis.
- Casting and Splinting: Gaining expertise in orthopedic support and immobilization.
- Local Anesthetic Injection: Learning the safe and effective administration of pain management.
- Laparoscopic Surgery Techniques: Exploring minimally invasive procedures through hands-on simulation.
- Patient Positioning: Demonstrating positioning of a surgical patient by utilizing safety principles.
- And much more!
The culmination of this immersive experience is the Comprehensive Casting and Splinting Clinic/Mock Surgery Day, held on Saturday, March 22. This event showcases the students' mastery of surgical assisting techniques in a simulated environment.
"This two-week lab is critical for our students to develop their practiced skill set prior to transitioning into their new role," says Rob Blackston, Program Director. "It allows them to apply the theoretical knowledge they've gained in a realistic setting, building confidence and refining their skills. The mock surgery day is especially exciting, as it provides an opportunity for them to put all of the individual skills together in a seamless flow."
The CWI Surgical First Assistant program is committed to providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in this vital healthcare profession. This annual lab event is a testament to that commitment, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to contribute to the surgical teams of tomorrow.
From Aspiration to ICU: Kimi Jenkins’ Journey to Nursing
CWI - Let's Get Started | Nursing
This is a true story about someone from our community who, despite long odds and those saying, “you can’t,” stood defiant and dared to anyway — launching a new career that began at College of Western Idaho.
This is the first of a series of stories from our Let’s Get Started 2.0 spring recruitment campaign. In it we feature innovators, builders, healers, and protectors, each of which capably demonstrate what’s possible when we exercise a grain of grit. After all, if our neighbors can do it, so can you.
Dedicated to care
Kimi Jenkins always knew she wanted to be a nurse, but as life took its course, her dreams were put on hold. Now, as a Registered Nurse in the Neuro Surgical Trauma ICU at Saint Alphonsus, she is fulfilling the goal she set for herself as a child — one that has been shaped by perseverance, supportive peers, and an unwavering dedication to patient care.
Jenkins’ path to nursing was anything but traditional. After becoming a mother at a young age, she prioritized raising her son, setting aside her own aspirations. For 18 years, she worked in insurance, but the passion for healthcare never faded.
When her son turned 18 and graduated high school, Jenkins knew it was time to chase her dream. “I have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little kid,” she said. “When my dad spent six weeks in a Neuro ICU after suffering a traumatic brain injury, I saw firsthand the incredible impact nurses have. That experience solidified my desire to work in the Neuro field.”
Not alone
Enrolling in the Registered Nursing program at College of Western Idaho (CWI) was a major step forward, but the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Self-doubt loomed, and the pressure to succeed weighed heavily. “I lacked confidence and was scared of letting myself and my family down,” Jenkins admitted. However, with the steadfast support of her professors, fellow classmates, and family, she discovered an inner strength she hadn’t realized was there. “I learned that I am stronger than I knew! We all faced difficulty in the RN program because it’s really hard, but everyone supported each other, including our teachers. Their encouragement helped me push through and finish strong.”
Jenkins’ biggest source of motivation was her father, who passed away from COVID-19 in 2020. The heartbreaking reality of not being able to be with him during his final moments only deepened her resolve to become a nurse who provides comfort to patients and their families. “The nurse who cared for my dad made sure we knew he was not alone. She and another nurse were with him when he passed. I want to pay that kindness forward.”
Power through persistence
Since graduating from CWI, Jenkins has completed a six-month critical care residency and secured a position in her dream department. Every day, she applies the knowledge and skills she gained during her time at CWI to make a meaningful difference in the lives of her patients. “The program was great! The professors really want to see you succeed. I have made lifelong friends from the nursing program.”
For those just starting their educational journey, Jenkins offers words of encouragement: “The road may seem long and daunting, but it’s going to fly by. You are stronger than you think, and you’ve got this!”
Her story is a testament to the power of persistence, the importance of support, and the incredible impact that nurses have on the lives of others. From overcoming self-doubt to honoring her father’s memory through compassionate care, Jenkins embodies the heart and dedication of a nurse who truly makes a difference.
Your journey forward starts with the courage to claim it. Discover your first step and let’s get started.

Building Up Skills and Career Dreams for Idaho
Students at Melba Junior High and High School had the chance to roll up their sleeves and explore hands-on career opportunities in construction during the recent Build Up Idaho event, held March 20. The day-long experience was all about getting students excited — and prepared — for real-world careers in the trades.
In the morning, eighth-grade students rotated through 10 interactive stations at the Melba Junior High gym. From learning how to read build plans to operating heavy equipment, the event offered an exciting preview of what construction and trade careers look like on the ground. The goal? To provide not just exposure but real, tangible skills students will remember as they begin to create their Career Pathway Plans.
Each 30-minute station was led by professionals from College of Western Idaho (CWI) and respected industry partners including Exyte, Kiewit, Idaho AGC, United Rentals, OSHA, the Department of Labor, and DASCO. Students learned everything from measuring and leveling to excavation and site safety — all while developing teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
Later that afternoon, the focus shifted to Melba High School where students selected six career-focused sessions to attend. Each session was led by industry experts — including CWI’s Plumbing and HVAC Trades programs — eager to share insights about their work and the journey it took to get there. Students gained valuable knowledge about career pathways and training options available to them after high school.
By bringing professionals and educators together, Build Up Idaho is helping fill the gap between student curiosity and career readiness. Events like these are more than just educational — they’re inspiring the next generation of tradespeople to dream big, start building, and take pride in the power of skilled work.
