Shawna Hanel's work selected for Juried Exhibition
College of Western Idaho digital photography instructor, Shawna Hanel, recently had one of her photographs included in a prestigious juried exhibition at Viridian Artists Gallery in New York. Hanel, who also teaches at Boise State University, examined the wasp nest in her project “Vanished Vespidae”, she used dynamic lighting in her images and shallow depth of field to direct your eye as you explore the texture and patterns of the nests.
In describing how she became interested in this photography subject, Hanel states, “Captivated by abstracted arrays of interlaced cycles of life and death, I now collect and photograph the fluttering fragments and crushed combs of demolished nests, illuminating the porous boundaries between the living, the dead and the vanished”.
