Vallivue Senior on College Fast-Track

Published: November 2, 2015

Caldwell native Katie Kelly has a dream of impacting people’s lives. In order to help others one day, the 17 year old high school senior is starting by helping herself.

In the spring, Kelly will graduate from Vallivue High School. At the same time, she will earn an associate degree from College of Western Idaho (CWI) and a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate. Through the CWI Dual Credit program, Kelly has taken advantage of the opportunity to jump start her college education and expedite her road to a nursing career.

“I am very excited about the prospect of graduating from high school and CWI at the same time,” Kelly says. “Dual credit has provided me the opportunity to get a huge head start toward my college goals at half the price.”

Kelly’s jump start on her degree is impressive; considering she comes from a family where college isn’t necessarily the norm.

“My Mom is the only one in my family who attended college. She has not put a lot of pressure on us to attend college, but has encouraged us to continue our education in some fashion as to better our chances of a more secure future.”

Kelly plans to apply for CWI’s associate degree Nursing program next year, having already completed the pre-requisites through Dual Credit. While most of her classes have been completed online, Kelly has had a chance to take some classes on the CWI campus which she says has helped prepare her for the rest of her college career.

“Naturally, I was very nervous at first, but now I feel much more comfortable with the college setting.”

Kelly says she has enjoyed taking college classes in high school, even if it has required a tremendous amount of dedication and commitment. At the end of the day, she understands how it can help her achieve her long term goals.

“Taking college courses in high school is a great way to prepare for later college life.”
