CWI Applies for Membership in National Junior College Athletic Association

Published: September 10, 2026

College of Western Idaho (CWI) has applied for membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), the national governing association for two-year college athletics.

The application is a formal step in CWI’s plans to establish an intercollegiate athletics program. Athletics at CWI will offer more than the opportunity to compete; this experience will complement a student athletes education by helping them grow personally, academically, and socially while developing skills they can carry into their careers and communities.

CWI has grown to serve more than 36,000 students, with 98.6% coming from Idaho. As the College has grown, so has its focus on creating new opportunities for the students and communities it serves. CWI sees athletics as a way to give Idaho student-athletes an affordable option to pursue a college education and continue competing close to home.

Athletics would also add another dimension to the overall college experience. In a recent survey, two-thirds of CWI students said they wanted a stronger sense of belonging on campus. The College sees athletics as one way to bring students together, build traditions, strengthen school pride, and help students feel more connected to CWI.

“Submitting this application reflects the momentum that has been building since CWI announced plans to establish athletics,” said Director of Athletics, Mahmood Sheikh.  “Our campus and community are rallying around this vision, and we’re energized by the work ahead. There is still a great deal of heavy lifting to do, but the opportunities created will be well worth it. We are creating a pathway for Southwest Idaho student-athletes to pursue their academic goals close to home while competing and showcasing their talents at the collegiate level.”

Pending approval of its application, CWI will become a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference as part of NJCAA Region 18, which includes eight colleges in Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, and Utah.

As part of the membership process, NJCAA representatives will conduct a campus visit next month. The College expects a decision on its application from the NJCAA Board of Regents in Spring 2027.

CWI plans to launch intramural sports and recreational programs during the 2026-2027 academic year, giving students more opportunities to participate, compete, and connect with the CWI community.

“As CWI continues to grow, we’re focused on building an athletics program that strengthens school spirit and opportunity for our students and community,” said CWI President Gordon Jones. “Pursuing NJCAA membership reflects our commitment to creating a sustainable, high-quality intercollegiate experience that complements academics and enriches campus life.”

CWI plans to take a deliberate approach to building its intercollegiate athletics program. A team would not begin competing until it is fully funded, with each sport supported by an endowment. This model is intended to provide stable, long-term support for CWI Athletics.

Specific sports, competition schedules, facilities, and start dates will be announced as plans are finalized, funding is secured, and the NJCAA membership process advances.
