Apply For Financial Aid

You are here

Federal student aid programs such as grants, scholarships, work-study, or student loans are available to assist students with direct educational costs. In order to be eligible for financial aid at CWI, you must complete the FAFSA. A breakdown of the financial aid process, including how to apply, complete any additional requirements, manage your financial aid, and more, is outlined below. The entire financial aid process can take several weeks.

Important information will also be displayed in myCWI. For help navigating your myCWI, watch our Financial Aid Navigation video

  • 1. Apply for Financial Aid

    Complete FAFSA

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online or with the myStudentAid mobile app.

The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) processes your FAFSA shortly after you submit it. Once processed, you will receive an email from DOE with your Student Aid Report (SAR) and an electronic copy is forwarded to CWI. You must add CWI's federal school code on your FAFSA in order for us to receive a copy. CWI's federal school code is 042118.

IMPORTANT – An FSA ID is required to sign your FAFSA and one must be created if you have not already done so. If your FAFSA requires parent information, they will also need to create an FSA ID. It is important that you remember your FSA ID number and do not share it. This number is required to log back in to your FAFSA to make corrections and to renew your FAFSA each year.

    Submit Required Documentation

We may request additional documentation to assist in preparing your financial aid award. Occasionally you may be required to provide additional information, even after submitting documents. If this is required, you will receive an email to your student email.

  • 2. Manage Financial Aid

    Receive Offer Letter

Once all documentation has been received, the Financial Aid Office will review your eligibility and determine what aid you qualify for. An email will be sent to your student email once your Offer Letter is ready. Log into your myCWI to view your Offer Letter.

    Accept, Reduce, or Decline Awards

Review and follow the instructions on your Offer Letter. Your financial aid award may include a combination of grants, scholarships, work-study, and student loans. We encourage you to reduce or decline student loans that you do not need. Be conscientious of the debt you accumulate and your ability to repay it.

Complete Loan Entrance Counseling & Master Promissory Note

First-time student loan borrowers are required to complete entrance counseling. Entrance counseling provides important information regarding smart loan borrowing.

All students who plan to borrow loans are required to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). An MPN is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loans and any accrued interest and fees. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loans.

  • 3. Receive Financial Aid

    Receive Funds

Once awards are accepted and entrance counseling and MPN are complete, your awards are ready for disbursement. Financial aid awards are distributed to your CWI student account each semester according to the disbursement schedule. Your aid first pays for your CWI charges, including tuition, fees, and bookstore charges (if applicable). If your aid exceeds your charges, the excess funds will be refunded to you.

    Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress

All students that receive federal financial aid are required by the U.S. Department of Education to maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP). SAP requires you to maintain a minimum GPA and only take classes that apply towards your desired degree or certificate. Review the CWI satisfactory academic progress standards carefully.
