College of Western Idaho Speech and Debate Team Beat Out 14 Colleges for First Place Honors

Five Students will Compete in the Upcoming National Tournament

MEDIA ADVISORY - The College of Western Idaho Speech and Debate Team has qualified five students to the Pi Kappa Delta National Speech and Debate Championships following a dominating performance last Saturday (Feb. 25) at the Oregon State University Earl Wells Memorial Speakeasy tournament hosted at Lewis and Clark University in Portland, Ore.

CWI ran away with the community college team title, outscoring runner-up Mt. Hood Community College (84.6 points) by 58.6 points. CWI’s impressive total of 143.2 points was the top score for the entire 14 team field, even outscoring the University Division Champion, Pacific University (100.6 points).

“I am thrilled to see such growth with our returning students and even rookies who competed for the first time this weekend with great success," stated Johnny Rowing, CWI Speech and Debate coach. “They are hard working, amazing people who are dedicated to our college and to this team.”

CWI tallied the remarkable team score behind five individual first-place finishes at the competition. CWI students also captured four runner-up finishes and seven third-place honors over the weekend.

Individual honors for CWI include:

Ariel Kizer – First in Open Poetry, second in Open Duo, first in Open POI, finalist in Open Drama, third in Novice debate

Jack Brumfield – Third in Drama, fourth in Open Duo

Mark Galaviz – First in Bad Interp, second in Impromptu, fourth in Open POI, second in Poetry, fourth in Duo

Alex Lange – First in Open Debate, fourth in Extemporaneous

Liam London – Third in Informative

Jordan Brady – Second in Drama Duo, third in Drama

Ryan Mulvaney – Fourth in After Dinner Speech

Matt Mudd – Third in Open Duo, fourth in Extemporaneous

Maile Newgen – Third in Open Duo

Cody Morgan – First in Impromptu, third in Extemporaneous

Marc Martinez – Fourth in Open POI

Stuart Craig – Fourth in Prose

Josh Garcia – Third in Drama

CWI Speech and Debate will now turn its attention to the 2012 Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament, held March 16-18, in Kansas City, Mo. CWI is the defending National Community College Speech and Debate Champion, having achieved a first-place finish at the 2011 national tournament in just the second year of competition for the College.
