The CWI Board of Trustees has adopted this policy to help provide a healthier learning environment for employees, students, and guests of the College. Scientific evidence proves smoking tobacco is hazardous to both active smokers and non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke. Each year in the United States, smoking accounts for an estimated 443,000 deaths and secondhand smoke causes an estimated 50,000 deaths from heart disease and lung cancer. Plus, for countless others, it's a respiratory and nasal irritant, and an allergen. The use of tobacco in other forms is also hazardous. The policy is also a result of the efforts of students, faculty, and staff who urged CWI to join hundreds of other colleges and universities around the country that are smoke and/or tobacco free.
